Taipei - Taipei will hold a city-funded gay festival this weekend and Asia’s largest gay pride march on October 13, the Taipei City government and gay rights groups said on Monday.
The carnival will be held this weekend with 12 Taiwan and foreign gay films being shown at the Honglou Theatre in central Taipei, said Jason Yeh, a city official.
‘The theme of this year’s gay carnival is Teach You How to Watch a Gay Film. We want the public to watch gay films in a relaxed atmosphere so that they can understand gay-related issues,’ he said.
The carnival, in its 8th year, will be followed by the Gay Pride March, now the largest in Asia, said the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline.
Tongzhi, comrade, is the euphemism for homosexuals in Taiwan.
‘We expect to mobilize 10,000 people to take part in the march which will proceed through Taipei’s main streets. During the march, the marchers will hold up coloured cardboards to form a human rainbow flag,’ Wu Hsu-liang, the hotline’s spokesman, said, referring to the six-colour flag symbolizing gay and lesbian pride.
‘Gay groups from Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong will participate in the march. There will also be individual homosexuals from other countries attending the march,’ he said.
Tolerance for homosexuals has grown in recent years in Taiwan, but Taiwan gays and lesbians are still fighting for equal rights, especially the right to get married.

Bangkok - Pride Festival has announced that the supported charities for 2007 will be Faisiroong (Rainbow Sky), and Swing, both of which recently lost some external funding.
Faisiroong is Thailand’s only officially recognised gay support group, working to educate the public about gay issues, gays about their rights and responsibilities, and spreading the word about HIV/AIDS prevention.
Swing are a hard working outreach group dedicated to assisting and educating ’service workers’ about sexual health in general and HIV in particular, and of course promoting safe sex under every circumstance.
Pride have also confirmed more events for November 3-11 PrideWeek, including the annual Long Yang Club sponsored Bowling Tournament on November 3, Hamilton’s Karaoke Contest on November 4; Loy Nava Dinner River Cruise on November 7, and the Pride Bash at G.O.D. on November 10. More events for that week will announced shortly too.

Bangkok - River cruise firm Loy Nava have generously donated an evening dinner cruise on November 7 in support of Bangkok’s Pride Festival.
Loy Nava are unrivalled in the dinner cruise market on the Chao Phrya River, operating beautifully converted rice barges along the city’s scenic waterway, while cruisers enjoy absolutely fabulous (really!) food and attentive service in a great atmosphere.
Pride Festival’s exciting dinner cruise will depart from the Si Phraya Express Boat Pier (behind the Portugese Embassy, off Chareonkrung Road) at 8pm on 7 November 2007. The price of 1000 baht per head includes an onboard generous set menu, wine, and the wonderful cruise, to the
sounds and sights of traditional Thai music and dance. All monies collected will go to Pride Festival charities.
Tickets are limited to 44; you should book well in advance to ensure your table on this very special night out. Contact info@pridefestival.org to request tickets. Phone orders should be available soon.

Bangkok - Plans for the city’s Pride Festival are moving forward with confirmed events that now include the annual Bowling Competition, sponsored by Long Yang Club Thailand, taking place at Maboonkrong’s Bowling Centre on Saturday 3 November; and a big Pride fund rasing party at G.O.D. Disco on Saturday 10 November that will include food stalls outside, with lots of drinks and stage entertainment inside. This will be sponsored by Thailandscene.com, and Coyote Restaurant.
The route of the Pride Parade on Sunday November 11 is still being negotiated with local police, but looks likely to assemble in Henri Dunant Road, parade past Siam Square, Siam Paragon etc, and disperse near Chulalongkorn University, with a Final Party taking place that evening in Silom Soi 4, hosted by the gay bars there.
Other planned events include a river dinner cruise on the Chao Phrya River (we understand that Loy Nava have again offered one of their wonderful Rice Barges although the date has not yet been agreed); The Balcony’s annual Isaan Party is slated for Thursday 8 November; Telephone have a Pride party planned for Saturday 10 November, while Balcony and Telephone jointly plan an afternoon festival in Silom Soi 4 also on November 10. Meanwhile, we understand that Bangkok’s best known sauna may also be holding a big Pride fund raiser…. We’ve also heard that several other events are under consideration, so when we know more you’ll see it here!
