Visiting Thailand

Q) Is it safe?
A) Yes. It is much safer than most western countries. Crime does exist but rarely affects visitors. Protests are rarely violent and rarely affect visitors, depite the lurid reports in the western media

Q) What about the muslim insugency we hear about?
A) That problem is restricted to three southern provinces that border with Malaysia. There is no problem in the rest of the country.

Q) When is the best time to visit?
A) The most popular period is November-early February, when the weather is less hot, and there are a number of fun events. However it is also high season for hotel bookings and air travel.

Q) What is the weather like?
A) Most of Thailand has three seasons, hot, cool and wet. Phuket and some other areas have more localised weather. The cool season can still feel hot in the central region around Bangkok, but can get very chilly in northern provinces. The wet season is generally mid April to late October, but can vary. Even in the wet season, it only rains for a couple of hours each day.

Q) Do I need a visa?
A) The rules are different for different nationalities. Check the website of your nearest Thai Embassy or Consulate. Many nationalities are eligible for a "visa waiver stamp" valid 30 days on arrival, but not all.
